I was pleased to again be able to attend this event for a preview of the forthcoming vintage release from all over the BDX region.
Overall, the quality in 2023 is great, with a number of delicious examples and a range of leaner wines up to some richer styles indicates a lack of uniformity in conditions this vintage. It's not a hedonistic vintage, but the riper areas crafted some really complex, layered and rich wines. The leaner examples managed to attain nice flavors and good balance, where the greener more underripe qualities are well managed in fresh, vibrant wines vs those that would be off-putting from a really difficult year. Attendance this year seemed slimmer with some notable absences- perhaps it was because this was the last stop and some folks opted out early for a myriad of reasons.
I began with Pauillac, then Margaux before hopping into Barsac/Sauternes (since those tend to run out before the end of the event). After a "sticky" reset, on to St. Julien, St. Estephe, Pomerol, then St. Emilion. I then opted to visit the whites for another palate cleanse/reset from Pessac/Graves, then back to their reds.
Listed not in order of tasting, but regionally:
Pessac-Leognan
Highest marks for blanc go to Larrivet Haut-Brion and rouge to Carbonniuex in this AOC.
Chateau Carbonnieux
Blanc: Punch gooseberry nose. Loads of lemon zest, honeydew and a touch of herbs.
Rouge: Stone-tinged aromas of red anchovies back fruits. It has a warm spice edge on the palate with red and black fruits and a touch of truffle umami on the finish. Very good!
Domaine de Chevalier
Blanc: Really nice texture with loads of melon and citrus.

Chateau Malartic-Lagraviere
Blanc: Nose of lemon and lime with zest and a touch of jasmine tea. Very nice wine.
Rouge: Stemmy aromas under red fruit with a touch of black fruits. It has good tension and structure- flinty while elegant. Red berry dominant with accents of black plum and berries.
(Pape Clement was absent, which was very disappointing, as I always tend to enjoy those.)
Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte
Blanc: A touch of kerosene/petrol and mineral on the nose. On the palate, nice honeyed fruit and good texture and balance with layers of citrus, florals and melon.
Rouge: Red fruit dominant aromas. Lots of minerality on the palate, driven by higher tones red fruits with some bass notes from black fruit. Lovely earthy notes from flavors of tea, stone and iron make it interesting.
Saint-Emilion
Highest marks here went to Pavie Macquin, but close seconds from Canon, Fourtet, Larmande and Valandraud with "equal" marks to one another.
Chateau Beau-Sejour Becot- The owner/winemaker indicated inclusion this vintage (I believe for the first time) of 15% whole cluster. Compared to prior vintages, of which I most generally enjoy wines form this house very much, it made a remarkable difference. It is a very fresh, elegant expression with added touches of tarragon and other fresh green herbs to accent the bright red and purple fruit flavors.
Chateau Canon- It has a very pretty nose with red berries and a touch of blueberry and minerals. On the palate, it's energetic with lots of layers of red, blue and black fruits underpinned by minerality and hints of black tea.
Chateau Canon la Gaffeliere- Aromas are of red and blue berry fruit with a pleasant touch of leafiness. On the palate, it has a lovely texture with loads of red, blue and black berry fruit and touches of bay laurel. Nice.
Clos Fourtet- Has nice depth on the nose with red and black plum aromas. It has great structure and tension on the palate with plum, red and black berry and a touch of minerality. Very good!
Chateau Larcis Ducasse- Riper nose of red and black fruits with a touch of leafiness. Oh the palate, a richer, bolder style than its neighbors with earthy, roasty and leafy edge. Flavors dominant of black plum and cassis.
Chateau Larmande- Beautifully floral nose with red and purple berries. This has lots of fruit on the palate with a mixture of red, blue and purple berry and plum with a touch of black tea and earth. Good texture as well. Very, very good.
Chateau Pavie Macquin- A touch of steminess on the nose along with floral aromas and red and black berry and plum. This has a delightfully expressive palate that is lively and rich with loads of red and black berry and plum flavors. Really nice!
Chateau Soutard- Floral nose of red and purple fruits. It has deep flavor driven by blue and purple fruit with good balance of earthy tones and fresh fruit.
Chateau Valandraud- Interesting nose with plenty of red, blue and black fruit along with notes of iron and gunpowder. On the palate, it's a very sexy wine with great texture and it lingers nicely with tons of fruit. A very pleasurable wine leaning to the richer side of this appellation.
Chateau Villemaurine- Nice notes of coffee and earth under nice red and black fruits.
Pomerol
Rouget was my favorite here, with close follow up by La Cabanne and Clinet.
Chateau la Cabanne- Darker aromas of black and blue fruits. It's a rich and ripe wine with excellent depth. Very nice!
Chateau Clinet- Lots of iron and graphite along with aromas of red and black berry. It's a dense, powerful expression with great structure and loads of red and black fruit. Excellent.
Chateau Gazin- Flint/gunpowder notes under red and black fruit on the nose. A wine with good tension on the palate, with a pleasant edge of minerals and earth alongside red and black fruit.
Chateau Petit-Village- Has a lovely nose with underlying earth and darker, blue and purple fruit. Lively acidity on the palate with bay leaf and tea amidst the blue and purple flavors.
Chateau Rouget- This has an interesting note of incense along with graphite and blue/purple fruit. The flavors match with a nice streak of black tea. It's complex and layered- Very nice wine!
Listrac-Medoc
Chateau Forcas Hosten- A nice wine- bright and fresh with good balance. A great option for everyday enjoyment.
Haut Medoc (shame on me, I somehow bypassed this section entirely)
Margaux
This tends to be consistently, my favorite AOC, so there is always perhaps a modicum of bias here. That said, this village shone again with high quality and delicious wines.
Highest marks to Brane Cantenac. Equal marks next to Cantenac Brown, Dauzac, Giscours, Lascombes and Rauzan-Segla.
Chateau Brane-Cantenac (one of my favorite wines and this maintained the reputation for me!)- Outstanding nose- very expressive! Loads of cassis and kirsch. Simply, a gorgeous wine! Rich., ripe and layered with gobs of black and blue fruits and a long finish.
Chateau Cantenac Brown- A more red dominant nose. On the palate, it's a bright, high-toned expression with "prickly" red berry fruit. It has good tension and freshness.
Chateau Dauzac- This one has a more oak-forward nose. Good balance on the palate with red and blue berry fruit. It's persistent with a good finish.
Chateau Giscours- Red and black fruit over a mineral-laden nose. Very nice- great minerality throughout with an iron-and-stone edge to the red and black berry and plum notes.
Chateau Kirwan- Lighter style. It's sexy, but lacks depth. A pretty wine.
Chateau Lascombes- A nice nose of pretty fruit and floral notes. It has some sumptuousness on the palate and just drinks very pleasurably.
Chateau Prieure-Lichine- A more subdued nose than others from this AOC. On the palate, it's pretty with nice red fruit with accents of purple berry with an interesting hint of fresh bread underneath. Nice.
Chateau Rauzan-Segla- Lots of fruit ranging form red to blue to purple. It has a great edge of minerality over luscious red and black berry fruit on the palate. Quite nice.
Chateau du Tertre- On the nose, gravel and red fruit. It has nice length on the palate. Good.
Saint-Julien
Top marks to Leoville Poyferre, followed closely by Beychevelle, Gloria, Langoa Barton.
Chateau Beychevelle- Lively nose, loaded with pretty floral notes and red/blue fruit. It's juicy on the palate with those red and blue berry flavors and has nice length. Very good.
Chateau Branaire-Ducru- Purple flowers and plum on the nose. It has nice verve and pleasant blue and purple fruit flavors.
Chateau Gloria- This has a really pretty nose with lots of red and blue fruit. On the palate, the flavors match in a vibrant, sexy and layered style. Very nice!
Chateau Langoa Barton- It has a pretty red-fruited nose. Beautiful purity on the palate with nice fruit in the red and black end of the spectrum. Very tasty.
Chateau Leoville-Barton- The aromas are underpinned with minerals, with the fruit in red and black. It has a nice layering of herbs and minerals under dark flavors of black and purple fruit. Quite good.
Chateau Leoville Poyferre- Aromas of wam berry tart- very welcoming. On the palate, it's luscious with pretty red and purple berry fruit. Very tasty indeed! Highly recommended.
Chateau Saint-Pierre- Nice red berry aromas. The wine ie enjoyable, but fairly one-note at least for me, on this day. A high acid, high toned expression with nice freshness.
Pauillac
Lynch-Bages takes the top prize here, with close second by Clerc Milon, Duhart-Milon, and Pichon Baron.
Chateau Batailley- Interesting nose with sanguine, mineral qualities under red berry fruit. It enters the palate with a lean, mineral frame with bright red fruits accented by a touch of black berry.
Chateau Clerc Milon- Punchy and robust with fresh red and black fruits. Very juicy!
Chateau D'Armailhac- A nice wine, but fairly middle-of-the-road for me compared with others today.
Chateau Duhart-Milon- A very tasty wine with pretty red and purple fruit. Sexy texture.
Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste- Nice freshness, but not overly remarkable. I may have been getting a bit of palate fatigue by this point. Nothing stood out.
Chateau Haut-Batailley- A black fruited nose with hints of black tea and bay leaf. The herbal edge remains nice through the palate of dark, black fruit.
Chateau Lynch-Bages- A very expressive palate on this wine! The last few UGC events, this house is consistent in its high quality and delivering a delicious wine. Loads of red and black fruit on wonderful texture. Highly recommend.
Chateau Lynch-Moussas- On the nose, tart blue and purple berry with mineral, lifted slightly by some red fruit. It has good lively acidity on the palate- a fresh style. Nice wine.
Chateau Pichon Baron- (full disclosure, this estate is part of the "family" of wineries I work with now- my first taste of the day to get acquainted with my colleague)- It has great balance and purity. Ripe, but retains verve and tension. Very good/high quality.
Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande- Red dominant nose. Pretty on the palate with high-toned red fruit and a nice edge of minerality.
Saint-Estephe
Chateau Ormes de Pez- A flinty, lithe and elegant wine. Nice.
Chateau de Pez- Very flinty and the fruit reads a bit sour. Perhaps it needs more time in bottle to unfurl more.
Chateau Phelan Segur- Roasty espresso nose. Red and blue fruits on the palate. It's elegant but has sharper edges.
Sauternes/Barsac
Chateau Coutet- Lovely aromas of white tea, and citrus blossom honey. On the palate, it's extremely floral and wonderfully expressive! Very highly recommended.
Chateau Doisy Daene- This nose has less of the honey/nutty quality of a LH wine, with more varietal character in its aromas. Honeydew, citrus. On the palate, it's elegant and sexy and remains very bright, leading it far from cloying or rich. Nice!
Chateau Suduiraut (another "in the family estate)- Nice aromas of honey, almond, toffee and hazelnut. On the palate it has terrific balance of acidity. It's luscious and succulent but retains verve. Very nice.
Chateau la tour Blanche- This has a unique pineapple and white tea nose with some crushed raw almond with citrus and melon. It's really beautiful on the palate! Lithe and sexy. It's a brighter expression, fairly light on its feet with great balance with the succulence underneath it all. Very highly recommended.
